Boutique Hotel
It's not the most-picturesque area in Montreal where Vancouver's famed-Opus debuted its second location within the boutique property formerly known as the Godin. Now known as Hotel 10, it's divided between a historic pre-war building and uber-modern addition that houses most of the guest rooms. Its location opposite a gas station and convenience store made it a difficult sell when the previous owners, who owned several area nightclubs and bars, ran into difficulties acquiring a liquor license for the in-house restaurant and lounge. A glass-enclosed entrance on a quiet side street accesses the main reception with open-plan lounge of leather sectionals, bright-upholstered chairs and long check-in counter attended by a staff in pinstriped vests and model grins. By night the hotel comes alive with an influx of younger locals looking to mix and mingle to house deejays while roaming the counter style bar and lobby reception area where most of the in-house residents hang-out before heading upstairs Should anyone be up for it, a new fitness center offers upgraded cardio equipment and free eight area to get in a midnight pump-up before hitting the town or just hitting the hay.
The Room
A groovy elevator opens to a wide corridor and large room doors that feel like your entering a chic city apartment. Rooms vary from one-room bedroom spaces to free-style loft accommodations with concrete ceilings, grey-wool carpeting and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a sterile cityscape. Opus has muted itself from its crayon-color guest rooms and instead adopted a more sophisticated design palette of substantial seating areas like leather sofas and '50s style Eames chairs. Freestanding wardrobes contain a complicated integrated TV and computer system that almost never works properly opposite a small mini bar with frilly martini glasses and collection of small-size premium alcohols. Bathrooms are compact spaces of rain showers with natural stone or concrete floors and glass tile work.
